Welcome to the course in Environmental chemistry! We hope that you will learn about and reach new perspectives regarding the human being and the environment based on your knowledge in chemistry. The course involves learning through lectures and literature studies in combination with seminars and exercises. It also involves an important group project on a specific subject related to the course.

Course description

The course is based on the students' chemistry knowledge and the special hazards associated with the chemical industry, but also adresses for example laws and legislations that regulate the handling of chemical products. The chemical basis for how health-damaging and environmentally hazardous compounds are absorbed and metabolized by organisms and the mechanisms behind their effects are discussed thoroughly. Emphasis is put on relationships between structure, chemical properties, and biological effects. A course part dealing with external environment discusses aspects of eight environmental threats: gases affecting the climate, ozone depletion, soil and water acidification, photochemical oxidants/tropospheric ozone, overfertilization of soil and water, environmental influence of metals, toxic effects of organic compounds on the environment, disrupted environmental/ecological cycles, and hazardous by-products.

Course assessment

For a passing grade is required a passed written exam and a passed group project.
The written exam has 6 questions and a total of 60p. It is divided in two parts; 30p each for Part A environmental questions and Part B toxicology questions, respectively. For a passing grade 3 is required a total of 30p, for grade 4 is required 40p, and for grade 5 is required 50p. Furthermore, for a passing grade is required a minimum of 10p for each of Parts A and B.
A passed group project report and presentation will give you bonus points to add to the exam points provided that you already have 30p on the written exam:
2 = Passed with a minimum requirement with respect to research, form, and content.
5 = Very good project with respect to most of the factors research, form, and content.
8 = Excellent with respect to all factors research, form, and content.
The project is a literature study done in groups of three students. A written report should be handed in the last study week and an oral presentation will be done the last study week (see schedule below). Each group presents its project and opposes one other group. After each presentation the opposing group will provide immediate feedback to the presenting group. A passed group project requires 1) passed written report, 2) passed presentation, and 3) an opposition completed.

Project presentation will be done on four 2h-sessions the last study week. You have to attend all presentations at the session when your own group presents its project. However, you are of course also welcome to attend all seminar sessions if you wish to do so. Your group should sign up for one presentation session:

Registration of results and grades
Grades are reported to the LADOK data base only in connection with exams. This means that project reports has to be emailed to Urkund on Feb 27 at the latest and finally passed on Mar 6 in order for grading to be registered at the end of the course! Thereafter registration of grades will only be done when extra exams are given.
